Application
Character Name: Toph Beifong
Canon: Avatar: the Last Airbender
AU/OC/Previous Game: totally canon, unless you count dying young
Age: 13
Appearance: Toph is a short, stocky preteen. She appears East-Asian to people from Earth, with long black hair that she normally wears pulled back with a headband. Her most distinctive trait, however, are green eyes that are clearly clouded over. And that she is nearly always barefoot (or removes the soles from her shoes).
Cause of Death: Unknown; I'm going to keep comics canon, but the comics haven't been fully released yet, so Toph is fuzzy on her death and some of the details surrounding it.
Impact of Death: Toph will hide her feelings -- she'll probably start complaining about how she once destroyed an entire fleet of airships so dying was stupid. She'll be upset mostly for her friends and family -- she was okay with being on her own and only seeing them once in a while, but she knows that it will confirm all her parents' worst fears and hurt her friends. She'll also struggle with a reputation problem -- she went from being the world-famous metalbender and teacher of the Avatar to a blind preteen girl. She'll be extra surly and sarcastic towards anyone who tries to hint she can't handle herself. Thusia itself will bother her, since she can't help much outside HQ.

Character Info: When Toph Beifong was born blind, her wealthy parents reacted by sheltering her to the point where few knew of her birth at all. In some children, this might have made them quiet or fearful. Toph was quite the opposite -- even before she was walking, she was getting into trouble. Like finding the giant badgermoles that lived beneath her town. Like her, they were blind, and like her, they had the power of earthbending. Toph learned to sense things via the earth -- making up for her lack of vision -- and how to manipulate the rocks and soil around her.
Even signs that their daughter was an earthbender didn't make the Beifongs relax -- Toph's father did give her an actual tutor, Master Yu, but her father insisted she only be taught stances and breathing exercises. Toph found her own excitement by sneaking off and competing as a prize fighter in Earth Rumble IV, under the alias of the 'Blind Bandit'. Her experiences with her parents led her to lead a double life -- Toph Beifong was the quiet, obedient, safe daughter her parents wanted; while the Blind Bandit was a champion earthbender, able to take on men several times her size and twice her age without them holding back. Toph could be the courageous, outgoing badass she naturally was in the ring.
Things changed when she was 12. Avatar Aang was looking for an earthbending teacher. Toph refused at first, knowing that she couldn't travel with the Avatar when her parents wouldn't let her go outside the house on her own. When she and Aang were kidnapped, she earthbended in front of her parents to save him and prove to them she was capable. She finally confessed to her parents what she'd been doing, hoping for their acceptance. Instead, she got told by her father she was going to be guarded night and day, lest she do something like that again, so, hurt and angry,Toph ran away to join Aang. Despite this, Toph still loves her parents, she just wishes they could see the daughter they have in her and love her for being Toph.
Toph didn't adapt well to working in groups at first. She had never learned a balance between the absolute dependence her parents expected of her and the 'I can take care of anything' she used to become a prize fighter, so accepting that a group means it's okay to count on other people without being seen as weak was hard. Toph will probably always be rude, blunt, self-reliant, and prone to ignoring social conventions but working with her friends made her more comfortable about listening to advice and counting on others.
Toph accompanied the group to Ba Sing Sei, where she used her upper-class background to assist in getting the group where they needed to be, and helped in rescuing Aang's sky bison, starting a coup, and planning an invasion of the Fire Nation. News of a letter from her mother sent her alone into the city -- where bounty hunters trapped her in a metal box to take her home to her parents. Of course, Toph's stubbornness meant this couldn't stand. Banging on the box let her sense the impurities of earth left in the metal, allowing her to tear the box open and trap them in it. Incidentally, she's the first known earthbender to be able to work metal.
Unfortunately, Ba Sing Sei fell to the Fire Nation, and the intelligence gathered in the result allowed Firelord Ozai to counter the invasion. The group was forced to find a backup plan and quickly, since Ozai was planning on setting the whole Earth Kingdom on fire when Sozin's comet returned. Then Aang went missing at the eve of the invasion. Hoping that he'd eventually show up to stop Ozai himself, Toph and the group's two non-benders, Sokka and Suki, went to go disarm Ozai's fleet of airships.
Needless to say, Aang showed up to kick Ozai's ass, and a metalbender, an engineer and a ninja is quite enough to destroy a fleet of airships full of firebenders. Toph hung around the group long enough to see their ally, Ozai's estranged son, Zuko, be crowned Firelord by Aang and to have one last cup of tea in Ba Sing Sei before hitting the road to show off her metalbending skills… I mean, teach other earthbenders how to metalbend.
Old Game Info: n/a
Abilities (after Powercap): Toph is a master earthbender and metalbender -- in other words, she can manipulate earth, stone and metal by martial arts. She can't create these materials, but can levitate them from nearby sources.
Toph is blind, but she's able to perceive the world around her via seismic sense -- feeling the vibrations through stone, dirt or metal floors, giving her a sense of what or who is on them. This will work as it normally does in Thusia, except that Toph's ability to detect lies by changes in heartbeat and breathing will be opt-in. (It also won't work unless you're human or close.) She also can tell things like 'that suit of armor doesn't have anyone inside it' and 'yeah, you're not at all human-looking to this sense', and she is good at vocal recognition -- but I'll try to keep that opt-in too.
One of Toph major earthbending limitations in Thusia will be the lack of metal and that the only stone is part of headquarters, or held deep beneath the waters in the forest. In other words, even if Toph wasn't power-capped, she would have to be careful in large scale use to not cause a cave in. Add in that she can't use her seismic sense if she leaves HQ and tree branches (or flight) will hinder her stances, so without a god's help, Toph will have major problems in the forest.
Most of Toph's Thusian limitations will be in scale. She'll be able to keep a lot of her advanced techniques, but will be limited in the amount of earth or metal she can comfortably manipulate at a time. Rather than hauling up tons of rock, she'll be able to manage rocks of her own weight or less. In other words, she will have to be economical about her use of earthbending blocks and strikes. It will also have to be relatively close to her, and she'll have trouble moving things she can't touch -- she could control a blade without touching it, but would have to struggle to grab it from an opponent.
Items Brought In: In addition to her clothing and a bracelet made of meteoritic iron that Sokka gave her, Toph has her passport and a snack. She's not exactly used to traveling with a lot of possessions.
